Well, I'm hoping 2015 is going to be less stress than 2013 and 2014, so plenty of reading time!  I even have a list of books I want to get to this year!

1. The Strange Library by Haruki Murakami - Strange but oddly compelling

2. The Merman by by Carl-Johan Vallgren - Fantastic but harrowing

3. Where'd You Go Bernadette by Maria Semple - Slightly daft, but a well observed romp

4. The Black Spider by Jeremias Gotthelf - 19th Century Swiss morality tale about village's pact with the devil. Strong stuff indeed.

5. Sandman Slim by Richard Kadrey - Man sent to hell by nasty friends escapes and returns to LA to give them a good telling off.

6. He Wants by Alison Moore - Slow burn story which only got mildly warm in the last ten pages or so

7. Strange Weather in Tokyo by Hiromi Kawakami - woman meets old school teacher after many years and strike sup relationship.

8. The Collini Case by Ferdinand von Schirach - Fantastic cross between legal thriller and why-dunnit with real literary merit.

9. Honeysuckle Cottage by PG Wodehouse - Haunted cottage forces residents to write romantic literature

10. Wonder by RJ Palacio - Young lad with badly deformed face goes to high school and finds people are both nasty and nice

11. The Shiralee by D'arcy Niland - Reckless father steals daughter from mother as revenge and takes her travelling in the Australian outback. Touching scenes ensue.

12. George's Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl - Reckless boy tries to poison Granny

Now that I think that I may know what I am doing I will post my book list for 2015 here. Last year I was fairly new to BGO so did not know what to do. I have kept a book list of my own this year but as it contains 39 books I cannot face typing the whole lot out to add to this years lists!

1 Middlemarch by George Eliot - one of the best books I have ever read!

2 Luckey Jim by Kingsley Amis - mildly amusing but a bit dated and if I am honest a bit disappointing!

3 Me Before You by Jojo Moyes - an unexpected read for me but a surprising one. Lent to me by a friend I was very glad of the recommendation. A very thought provocking readin which left me howling at the end!

4 The Woodlanders by Thomas Hardy. Suggested by my daughter. Well worth the read although fairly light weight in comparison with other books by the same author.

5 When We Were Orphans by Kazuo Ishiguro. Enjoyed about two thirds of the book but found part of it truly unbelievable which rather ruined it for me. Was left with the feeling of having missed some vital element of the book.

6 The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. Both entertaining and intriguing with a little darnkness thrown in! Thoroughly enjoyed.

7. We Need To Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver. A book you have to brace yourself to read. Disturbing.

8. Life After Life by Kate Atkinson. A bit far fetched and a little bit difficult to follow at the beginning but very entertaining. Loved the family from The House at Fox Corner. As long as you are prepared to suspend belief a bit to be recommended.

9. The Sleepless Moon by H E Bates. I found this a little bit like hard work and very nearly gave up about half way through. I did finish the book but doubt that I would read another by the same author!

10 Behind The Scenes at the Museum by Kate Atkinson. Although a little difficult to follow in places a thoroughly enjoyable read. Would recommend it.

11. Next of Kin by John Boyne. An entertaining thriller which I found very easy reading. Great book to read around more demanding novels.

12. Adam Bede by George Eliot. Less involved story than Middlemrch and a bit of a smaller cast of characters but just as beautifully written. Will probably be one of the highlights of my reading year!

13. The Good Girl by Mary Kubica. Unusual thriller with a surprising twist at the end. Entertaining reading.

14. Silas Marner by Goerge Eliot. Shorter and less complicated than other of her books but just as enjoyable.

15. So Much For That by Lionel Shriver. Amusing satire regarding the health insurance system in the U S A.

16. A Pair Of Blue Eyes by Thomas Hardy. Bit of a cross between Far From The Madding Crowd and Tess. Not quite as strong as either but a lovely read still.

17. The Thread by Victoria Hislop. A good book struggling to get out. Good basic story but poor character development and too detailed descriptions of unimportant aspects of character's lives makes the book a bit of a plod!

18. Case Histories by Kate Atkinson. A cross between a thriller and a comedy with great characters. Thoroughly enjoyable.

19. One Good Turn by Kate Atkinson. This is the second in the Jackson Brodie series, Case Histories being the first, and although still an entertaining read I found to be a little weaker in virtually all respects than the first!

20. Romala by George Eliot. Set in 15th century Florence Romala is a much darker book than others I have read by the same author although displaying many of the usual themes found in books by George Eliot. Although I enjoyed the book I found it quite difficult reading at times.

21. Us by David Nicholls. An easy and enjoyable read but a bit disappointing after One Day.

22. The Narrow Road to the Deep North by Richard Flanagan. Thoroughly harrowing but displaying surprising insight too. A must read!

23. Disgrace by J M Coetzee. Rather a brutal book painting a rather bleak picture of South Africa.

24. When Will There Be Good News by Kate Atkinson her third in her Jackson Brodie series. As is usual with this author you have to be prepared to suspend belief a bit but a good entertaining read with some warm and very likable characters.

25. The Betrayal of Trust by Susan Hill. The sixth book in The Simon Serrailler series. Usual easy reading but not the strongest book in the series. Usual set of characters so nice to carry on with some of their stories.

26. A Question of Identity by Susan Hill. The seventh in The Simon Serrailler series. Much better than the previous one for me. Thanks to this book I will continue with the series, had my doubts after the last one!

27. Started Early, Took my Dog by Kate Atkinson. The fourth book in The Jackson Brodie series. Once again an easy read peopled by truly likable characters. Very entertaining.

28. Daniel Deronda by George Eliot. Brilliant book written by a women ahead of her time. The more I read by George Eliot the more my admiration grows!

29. Engleby by Sebastien Faulkes. One of his best. Less than easy reading at times due to some of the content but a book that I did not want to put down.

30. The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson. Very easy to read and thoroughly enjoyable.

31. Ross Poldark by Winston Graham. Well written and enjoyable to read.

32. Stonemouth by Iain Banks. Although not one of his classics, a thoroughly enjoyable read.

33. Demelza by Winston Graham. Thoroughly enjoyable to read, just great entertainment.

34. The Mill on the Floss by George Eliot. Sad story but with many humourous parts. Wonderful characters as expected with Eliot.

Interesting comment on the decline in published works since the 19th Century. I don't find this to be true however. Nor I suspect do most BGO readers, who post mostly on contemporary novels etc. Although a Victorian junkie myself, I cannot without an effort 'go back' to Dickens and George Eliot, not to mention the Brontes or Melville or Hawthorne. There's just so much good stuff around, too much I often think, and therein lies the trouble. With so-called masterpieces being almost forced upon us each day one needs to be highly, very highly, selective. The only classic I often browse in is Proust's long novel, always a joy. But I don't have another lifetime to re-read. So, 3 or 4 pages at a time does me, lifts my spirits and gives me plenty to think about. I used to try to read the Booker winners, but gave up after Pi and Hollinghurst. Anyone read the latest winner? Is it worth the effort? After browsing it in bookshops I decided to give it a miss. Was I wrong or was I wrong?
