lunababymoonchild
I'm almost afraid to mention this but is anybody intending to buy a copy? My father is picking his up tomorrow and I'll get a read of it in due course. I know that Brown isn't popular and having read the Sunday Times interview of him yesterday I now know where he gets his terrible prose from. Nevertheless I am looking forward to reading it. jfp
That is very funny, and very apt, and reminds me of why I won't be reading Inferno. (I gather it's a remake of The Da Vinci Code, with Dante instead of Da Vinci... I won't be checking though.) Â EDIT: here's an appetizer... Â He had a shaggy beard, bushy mustache, and gentle eyes that radiated a thoughtful calm beneath his eyebrows. Â Or: Â As Langdon stared into his own weary eyes, he half wondered if he might at any moment wake up in his reading chair at home, clutching an empty martini glass and a copy of Dead Souls, only to remind himself that Bombay Sapphire and Gogol should never be mixed. lunababymoonchild
Glasgow Waterstones have stocked extra copies of Dantes Inferno as a result of Dan Brown. You never know.
momac
Ordered the Kindle version, had a look at the preface and a couple of the first pages, sounded a bit too mystical for me, asked for Amazon to take it back, which they did promptly. I may wait until it's in the library, just didn't want to pay over $18.00 for something I may not care for. Didn't like his last book, the clues within clues began to get a bit tedious. I have enjoyed a couple of the previous books, I liked the Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons but wasn't impressed by his last one.

It's not like the prose can be enjoyed. My father says he doesn't notice the bad prose but is now getting bogged down in the story, so you probably made the right decision. lunababymoonchild
Read the first couple of pages of this and haven't been back, the prose is particularly bad.

momac
Hi Luna: Dave (OH) told me that there was a copy of Inferno in the express section of the library (allowed 7 days to read it) and I think I'll ask him to pick it up if he sees it next time he's in there. I know I sent the one back to Amazon as I didn't want to spend the money on something I may not like so borrowing it from the library is risk free. In the newspaper entertainment section Inferno is at the top of the list of new fiction so he has a huge following. Maybe this one will be better than the last one I read, it's worth a look anyway once I get by the prologue! Maybe if you decide to read it we can compare notes (that's if I manage to get it some time soon).

momac
I have decided to read it so we can compare notes any time, Momac. Â Â The express copy wasn't there so Dave didn't put my name on the waiting list - I would be #259! However, the express one comes in every 7 days so it's a case of being there when it's there. lunababymoonchild
Have abandoned this, the prose is absolutely shocking and my father - for the first time ever - told me it wasn't worth reading.
momac
Thanks for the information Luna re Inferno, will not be bothered waiting for it now. Â Am having no luck with the Facebook thing - I guess I just don't know how to navigate, keeps asking me lots of questions about various sites, eg. Hotmail, Yahoo etc. - I don't use any of those - sent a help request to Facebook to see if they can sort me out, if not, I'll not bother. But thanks for your help. Probably if I asked one of the young kids on our block they'd be able to do it in a flash, however, I don't know any of them other than waving to them. Binker
Okay, so I decided to read this. I thought Da Vinci Code was a page-turner, even though the writing was dreadful and the plot terrible. I found Angels and Demons unreadable. But this got better reviews, so I thought I'd treat it as a romp and go for it. Â I was romping along fine until chapter 79, at which point I almost gave up. The weight of the convoluted plot with twist upon twist upon twist and the really terrible writing was almost more than I could bear. But I was almost done and decided to finish it. My conclusion is that it could have been the best of the Dan Brown books, but he just couldn't help himself and it ended up being not very good at all. Â Langdon wakes up in a hospital, not remembering anything that happened in the previous 2 days. He is immediately attacked and as usual is being helped my a slightly-mysterious, much younger beautiful woman who eventually sort of falls for him. I believe that Brown used the word "willowy" to describe her. Because of course he would. Langdon and this woman are fighting a vast global conspiracy that might result in the complete obliteration (mistakenly referred to at least once as "decimation") of human life. There are way too many twists--people who were allies turn out not to be and vice-versa. Some things that seem real are not. The conspiracy turns out to be oddly less horrible than it first seemed, etc. etc. etc. Â The best thing about the book is that it takes place in Florence, Venice, and Istanbul and so you get to visit (or re-visit) those cities and their museums. Interestingly, the big set piece takes place in an ancient cistern in Istanbul that I think featured in some other spy or mystery book that I read. Â So, I didn't really like it, but my expectations were only very slightly raised, so I wasn't that disappointed, either.
