Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

Recommended Posts

I've created this thread here because other Harry Potter books have been listed under GENERAL FICTION rather than CHILDREN & YOUNG ADULTS.

I've just listened the audiobook narrated by Stephen Fry. It took me a while to find a Stephen Fry version because the American editions are narrated by Jim Dale. Stephen Fry is a very good reader and I found that all of his characterisations worked for me even if some were not as I expected (having seen the films). This first book in the series lends itself to being read out and I am looking forward to the rest of the series

It should be here really so I've moved it. There was one other HP thread that needed moving, though interestingly when you search under Rowling two other threads come up in the adult sections that really shouldn't since the posts were merged/deleted. If you click on them you'll see they don't have Quote buttons and indeed I have no moderating options to delete them. How odd. True ghosts in the machine!

I love Stephen Fry's reading of this whole series. We have been collecting the spoken word versions since the books started to be published. I think to date we have listened to the whole series three time - but it could be four. The only problem we have is that the first five books in our collection are on tape and our car only plays CDs now - although we use a tape walkman and one of those FM transmitters (I think that's what they are called) so that we can hear the tapes through the car's audio system. It's not the most efficient system, so we might treat ourselves to CDs of the earlier books one day.

I actually think Fry's character voices are superb. The Philosopher's Stone may be the weakest since once the films came out, his voice takes on the film characters beautifully.

I have heard part of the Jim Dale version and personally do not like it at all - but then I am totally sold of Fry's version so may be biased on this point.

We'd be interested to know which Harry Potter books you think is the best.

      And why?

      So is it
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
      or
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix?

Apparently JKRowling's finished writing the 6th book, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Wonder who the Half-Blood Prince is gonna be? I read somewhere that JKR was going to call the 2nd one the Half-Blood Prince, but then when she finished writing it it didn't fit in with the story, so there could be some clues there...!

Well someone had to start a thread to actually discuss the book!

Try not to provide too many spoilers, but as there was lots of discussion in the "Who's going to be reading HP6" and the Childrens Discussion list, I thought it deserved a specific home!

Who wants to start us off with their opinions??
