Marc Chagall was born in Vitebsk in Russia in the late 19th century.

The most vivid part of this biography deals with his early life there and the influence of his Russian-Jewish heritage on his art. Even the most supportive critics of his work agree that his best work was accomplished by 1922 before he left for France, sailing then to America to escape Vichy France, and finally settling in France again where he died aged 85.

The colour plates are excellent and do justice to this great colourist.

"I was a good artist, wasn't I?" Chagall asked near the end of his life. Yes, but greatest near the beginning.
