Lyric chain

Recommended Posts

Inspired by the thread on poetry, but realising that the only poems I know are limericks(!), I thought i'd see if there was any interest in starting a lyric chain. I'll post an extract from a song lyric, and all you have to do is post another extract, from another song, which includes a word in common with my lyric. If you can highlight the linking word, that would help! Oh, and no linking words like "and," "the" etc.

OK, let's start with this:-

Maybe I'm being foolish, cos I haven't heard you mention anybody's name at all,

How I wish I could believe it's me that turns you on,

Each time you go to sleep,

But I've heard it said that dreamers never lie

(Talking In Your Sleep - Crystal Gayle)

You stare out in yellow eyes larger than my mind;

in viscous pools of joy, relaxing, we glide...

it's all too beautiful

for my mind to bear

and, as we shimmer into sleep, something's unshared.

...red and yellow and green and brown and scarlet and black and ochre and peach and and ruby and olive and violet and fawn and lilac and gold and chocolate and mauve and cream and crimson and silver and rose and azure and lemon and russet and grey and purple and white and pink and orange and blue!

from Joseph's Coat from the musical Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat by Ander Lloyd Webber

I have to admit I checked the order of the colours before posting this, but for the most part I remembered them correctly. And before you ask we did this as my year six 'leavers play' at junior school. If you heard those songs everyday for weeks on end you'd still remember the words ten years later too! :D

Oh tie a yellow ribbon

'Round the old oak tree

It's been three long years

Do you still want me

Yikes... you beat me Fiona...

Old red eyes is back

Red from the night before the night before

Walked into the wrong bar walked into a door

Old red’s in town

And sitting late at night he doesn’t make a sound

Just adding to the wrinkles on his deathly frown

(Old Red Eyes is Back - Beautiful South)

Last night I heard someone walking

Through my bedroom door.

What they want I’m not exactly sure.

Eels - Friendly Ghost

Starry - not only did I just beat you, but I'd also picked the same word to carry on with as you... Little bit weird methinks! :P

Don’t talk of love,

But I’ve heard the words before;

It’s sleeping in my memory.

I won’t disturb the slumber of feelings that have died.

If I never loved I never would have cried.

I am a rock,

I am an island.

(I am a Rock - Simon and Garfunkel)

Fiona - Great minds think alike! :)

Query; who gets credited with the lyrics in these posts, the singer or the writer?

I ask 'cos 'Golden Slumbers' was certainly not a Beatles composition, it was around when I was a baby, and probably for years before that.

Good question... I'm just guessing here - it's MFJ's thread after all! :P But since it's the lyrics we're following on with I wouldn't have thought it would matter, I guess the artist/writer is there more to let us track down the song you're writing about, it would be the song name thats the important bit to get right.

Starry - Me? Great Mind? Why thank you, thats the best compliment I've had so far today! :D

Anyway, my lyrics...

Maybe there's a God above

And all I ever learned from love

Was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you

It's not a cry you can hear at night

It's not somebody who's seen the light

It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah

Hallelujah - Rufus Wainwright (and almost certainly others :P)

Starry, starry night

Paint your palette blue and grey

Look out on a summer's day

With eyes that see the darknes in my soul

There's a case in point. Leonard Cohen wrote it, and sang the original.

Calling out around the world,

Are you ready for a brand new beat?

Summer's here and the time is right

For dancing in the street.

Johnny's got a light on his eyes and Shirley's got a light on her lips

Jake's got a monkeyshine on his head and Debra Ann's got a tiger in her hips

They can twist and turn, they can move and burn,

They can throw themselves against the wall

But they creep for what they need and they explode to the call

And then they move! Move!

Sex beat, go...

'Sex Beat' The Gun Club (1981, written by the late, great Jeffrey Lee Pierce)

(PS Dolly Parton recorded 'Tie a Yellow Ribbon'..?)

You know you look so good (look so good)

You know you look so fine (look so fine)

Come on and twist a little closer, now

And let me know you're mine

Every day when I'm away I'm thinking of you,

Every land, I need a hand to help me come through,

Cos you know that our love, and you know that I,

And you know that our love won't die.

Everyday - Slade

Forever the battle rages,

evil tries to kill the innocent baby

and only Osiris, the Lord of the Dead,

can eventually save it.

So we must cast aside our future fears

and call out on the Boat of Millions of Years.

The God of Love is on our side

and with him we shall not die...

there's life in the Sun!

There's life in the Sun!

Only in violence is the cause lost:

in peace, grey Set can't kill our baby of love.

God said to Abraham, 'Kill me a son'

Abe said, 'Man, you must be putting' me on'

God said, 'No'

Abe said, 'What?'

God said, 'You can do what you want Abe, BUT

the next time you see me comin' you better run!'

Abe said, 'Where'd you want this killing done?'

God said, 'Out on Highway 61'

Highway 61 Revisited - Bob Dylan

Coo! Coo! I just want you

I really love the things that you do

Come on ! Love-a-me too

Won't you be my coo ca choo

Sweetness - I like your dress

I love the way you know you're the best

I'm in love! an' I'm in a mess

I really want you coo ca choo

Love you

yes I love you

yes I love my coo ca choo

Want you

yes I want you

yes I - I really do want you

My Coo Ca Choo - Alvin Stardust

I've never seen you looking so lovely as you did tonight,

I've never seen you shine so bright,

I've never seen so many men ask you if you wanted to dance,

They're looking for a little romance, given half a chance,

And I have never seen that dress you're wearing,

Or the highlights in your hair that catch your eyes,

I have been blind

Plato's spawn cold ivyed eyes

Snare truth in bone and globe.

Harlequins coin pointless games

Sneer jokes in parrot's robe.

Two women weep, Dame Scarlet Screen

Sheds sudden theatre rain,

Whilst dark in dream the Midnight Queen

Knows every human pain.

Kiss the boots of shiny shiny leather

Whiplash girlchild in the dark

Tongue of thongs, your mistress now awaits you

Strike, dear mistress, cure my heart.
