Penguin - Polly Dunbar

Recommended Posts

This has been one of my favourite picture books since before it's Greenaway nomination in 2007.

When Ben receives a Penguin as a present he has high hopes of becoming good friends with it. However, Penguin is a bird of few words and Ben slowly gets more and more frustrated.

The minimalist illustrations are simple but effective, and while Penguin's expression doesn't change, you can read so much into it!

The punchline may be slightly traumatising to more sensitive toddler's but the moral is great for parents / carers and children alike - people don't always look like they are paying attention to you, but they can absorb much more than you expect!

A lovely book that I can (and have!) read over and over again!!!
