i was coming to post her death too. i really loved asterix as a child, getting the asterix books in the local library so its made me sad even though i hadn't even realised she translated them.

i thought her translation of walter kempowski's novel all for nothing was superb.

Author and book reviewer Eileen batters by after car accident

https://www.irishtimes.com/news/ireland/irish-news/former-irish-times-critic-eileen-battersby-dies-following-car-crash-1.3741172?mode=amp

She has had a really big influence on my reading choices. Her love of books in translations were what encouraged me to get into them.

On a Saturday, the first thing I would do would be to search out to see what she reviewed that week.

There have been so many great books that I read because of her recommendations

June Whitfield at 93

We can't really complain at losing her after such a long and varied career, but it really has been a joy to  see/hear her work.

I remember her in "Take It From Here" on the radio, between my 7th and 14th birthdays , as "Eth"; girlfriend, fiancée & then wife to Ron Glum.

Then  in partnership with Terry Scott in a couple of long-running TV sitcoms from the late sixties to the mid eighties.

I was not an AbFab fan, so only saw her in trailers for that, but she endeared herself to a new generation if viewers for her work in that.

What a career!

I never saw Albert Finney on stage but from 'Saturday Night and Sunday Morning' onwards I always looked out for a movie that  he appeard in.  It was the only time i was trendy, making a beeline for the early 60s new wave cinema.

I didn't mean the article didn't give her age - but that 62 is no age at all. A life cut short

edit: I see I forgot to actually link my post to the BBC obituary - have now amended that

Princess Lee Radziwell and Bruno Ganz, both on February 16, 2019.  I was not familiar with Ganz until I saw him in "Unknown."  Quite a part.

Toni Morrison, author of Beloved,  one of the most moving books i have read, with a particularly controversial scene which I thought prompted much discussion here.

The thread on it is rather truncated, and does not reflect that response. It appears to be another that has been lost in one of the historic breaks in the BGO timeline

I have not read any of her other books, although there are BGO threads  on some

And Clive James.

Such a witty man. I used to enjoy seeing & hearing his broadcasts. I was so sad when I heard, some years ago, that his illness was so advanced he could no longer endure the long flight back to Australia. It seemed awful that he should spend his latter years more or less in exile here.

Yes it was a very sad day yesterday, Jonathan Miller - well known in the UK for the theatre - also died.
