Tom Swifty

I have been inspired by a comment from Stewart in the Gents thread to ‘appropriate’ this long-running game from Ship of Fools

First of all, a definition:

Tom Swifty - An unseemly compulsion to follow the word "said" with a colorful adverb, as in "'We'd better hurry,' Tom said swiftly."

This was a standard mannerism of the old Tom Swift adventure dime-novels. Good dialogue can stand on its own without a clutter of adverbial props.

For the purposes of this game, the adverb must relate in a punning manner with whatever ‘Tom’ says.

Examples (also filched from SoF):

" Who turned the lights out?" muttered Tom darkly.

" Sprouts always give me wind" said Tom breezily.
