This book covers Jain's travels through China during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Although I have read about the revolution before I don't think I had ever taken on board the brutality of some of the events. Some of the scenes and actions talked about in this book made my stomach quease, for example methods used to stop women getting pregnant. I was also shocked at the stark poverty which existed in China just 20 years ago. This was a good read in many places but I quite often felt lost, as the passages between time and place where often not clearly distinguished, and a year could pass in the space of a few pages without me realising untill later in that chapter.
