If on a Winter’s Night a Traveller (Se una notte d’inverno un viaggiatore) Italo Calvino – 1979 This is a really weird book. You don't know whether you are reading it or are on the lookout for a book the author is looking for. You don't know whether it's a book, a novel, some letters, the story of one person or two, or more? You really don't know where you're going and after a while you don't even know where you are coming from. But it's a lot of fun. This is a series of short stories based around nature and the countryside. Well, on the surface that's the theme. They read like updated fables, though whether they are all original or retellings I don't know. There are some corkers among them, mostly the ones where you feel slightly uneasy as something really nasty might be just about to happen. The book reminded me of Michel Faber's The Hundred and Ninety-Nine Steps. I enjoyed both books but feel like I missed something that wa's another level higher or lower than the one I was on.
