This very short biography was first published in 1952. I picked up a 1965 Collins "Makers of History" edition which is missing a couple of plates but is otherwise in quite good condition. For a book of only 140 pages, the author manages to provide a good introduction to Abraham Lincoln and expounds upon his views and motivations very well. He does this mainly by spending a half of the book exploring Lincoln's childhood and then first foray's into politics and the background to the Civil War. He then avoids going into much detail at all about the war and concentrates on the reasons why Lincoln was willing to go to war and the sacrifices he was willing to make to win that war. This short introduction to a man who was above all a politician left me wanting to read more about both Lincoln and the civil war.
