  5. Yet another one forced to read 'Mockingbird' for O Level. Completely ruined though by the numptiness of our English teacher who made us go round the class reading a paragraph each. This of course reduced the whole exercise to counting out where your next 'gig' would come, and playing / daydreaming / flicking stuff at boys in between.
  6. MD&G, I would add to your list: e) editors lose their sense of power to properly edit the work, otherwise risking prima-donna-fittery, and so no one can tell them if something stinks any more.
  7. 'The Insight Guide to Las Vegas' as I'm headed there shortly!
  8. 'How to Win Friends And Influence People' has a perennial, does-what-it-says-on-the-tin kind of appeal, methinks.
  9. In 1970, one of Mississippi's more colourful weekly newspapers, The Ford County Times, went bankrupt. To the surprise and dismay of many, ownership was assumed by a 23 year-old college drop-out, named Willie Traynor. The future of the paper looked grim until a young mother was brutally raped and murdered by a member of the notorious Padgitt family. Willie Traynor reported all the gruesome details, and his newspaper began to prosper. The murderer, Danny Padgitt, was tried before a packed courtroom in Clanton, Mississippi. The trial came to a startling and dramatic end when the defendant threatened revenge against the jurors if they convicted him. Nevertheless, they found him guilty, and he was sentenced to life in prison. But in Mississippi in 1970, 'life' didn't necessarily mean 'life', and nine years later Danny Padgitt managed to get himself paroled. He returned to Ford County, and the retribution began. 10. You are trapped in a parallel universe where the Christmas holidays last for six months. There are no shops open, no fresh food, no transportation and the cashpoints have no cash. I wish I was somewhere sunny and warm today.
  11. I think it's a really interesting read, and it's one of those books I often refer back to when I need to 'check myself out' on a low day If you want the real essence of yer man Robbins, it's worth taking in one of his weekend seminars. He is the ultimate live performer par excellence, and I know of no one else that can keep thousands of people entertained for 3 days at a stretch. His strongest points are the 'emotions as signals for action' and his work on beliefs and values and how we are driven by them (when we often didn't create them, our primary caregivers did). When we know how to catch ourselves in destructive patterns, and then rebuild something positive to replace them, it can be very liberating.
  12. Arjohn, Did you find it relatively easy to get the publishing of your book underway, or was it a long haul? Lulu
  13. Yes Abby, in this section we have listed out our top sellers in the UK in order as given to us by Nielsen Bookscan. This will be different to what you've got on the bestseller list over in California, but we've got a selection of the current top sellers over in the USA bestseller forum.
  14. Religion and the Decline of Magic - Keith Thomas
  15. We'd be interested to know which Harry Potter books you think is the best. And why? So is it Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire or Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix? Have a look at the poll above this message and vote for your favourite. Then, if you want to, explain you reasons.
  16. This will be perhaps the most anticipated book of 2005. Lynne Truss has turned her attention from punctuation to modern manners. Can she follow up Eats, Shoots & Leaves, or will that be a one-off? I think it's a good subject for her to tackle. You don't have to be Mary Killen to have spotted that people behave increasingly appallingly to one another - whether to strangers or friends.

  19. #1 New York Times bestselling author Nelson DeMille brings back Detective John Corey of The Lion*s Game and Plum Island in a provocative new novel inspired by actual events. On a Long Island beach at dusk, Bob Mitchell and Janet Whitney conduct their illicit love affair in front of a video camera, set to record each steamy moment. Suddenly a terrible explosion lights up the sky. Grabbing the camera, the couple flees as approaching police cars speed toward the scene. Five years later, the crash of Flight 800 has been attributed to a mechanical malfunction. But for John Corey and Kate Mayfield, both members of the Elite Anti-terrorist Task Force, the case is not closed. Suspecting a cover-up at the highest levels and disobeying orders, they set out to find the one piece of evidence that will prove the truth about what really happened to Flight 800--the videotape that shows a couple making love on the beach and the last moments of the doomed airliner. <iframe src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=bookgrouponli-20&o=1&p=8&l=as1&asins=0446576638&fc1=000000&=1&lc1=0000CC&bc1=CCFFFF&lt1=_blank&IS2=1&bg1=CCFFFF&f=ifr" width="120" height="240" scrolling="no" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" frameborder="0"></iframe>
