  1. Another sporadic poster here. Someone from another site very kindly passed on the news and since then, like Cassie, I've found it hard to come on the site. In all the time I've been with BGO, David has been a constant. Witty, thoughtful and occasionally fixated on Keira Knightly, his posts always made me smile. He took the time to get in touch when we had to say goodbye to our lovely dog recently and, as usual, managed to say just the right thing.

    I wish I'd been paying more attention to the boards recently, but now all I can do is offer condolences and say what is turning into a very soggy goodbye. For some reason, I always imagined him typing in one of those cord jackets with the leather elbow patches and I'll keep that image in my head for when the new Doctor Who comes on. I'll be raising both a glass of wine and my sonic screwdriver to a perfectly splendid bloke.

  2. I think I was pre-Phonics as a method. I would probably also be on record as a 'late' reader because I didn't get picked to read at school. Once they noticed me, we whizzed through the list. Didn't bother me either way because I was being read to and reading at home. For those of you with experience of Phonics, what do you think of the article?

  3. Final update. Just mopping up stragglers, but between hard copy sponsor forms and on line donations, we raised £1750 so thank you to anyone who contributed. This was done as part of the Pirates for Ellie Weekend in aid of Claire House Children's Hospice. Ellie's family are aiming to raise £6500 to pay for a day's care at Claire House in her memory. With donations from the rest of the pirate weekend, this year's total stands at £3000.

    Huge, huuuuuge thank yous - you are all good people! :banana:  :arms:  :flowers:

  4. I think Mel Smith would have delighted in a bit of irreverence at his passing, so it's in that spirit that I post one of my favourite Smith and Jones sketches, carried by Smith's reactions.  As a note of interest, I believe this was the first televised sketch written by Paul Merton.

    Never seen that before and it made me laugh. I'd much prefer to be remembered with a smile than a tear - I'd like to think Mel Smith was the same.

  5. Did it yesterday! OK, it was by mistake, but still. Was wearing flip flop type sandals and they'd rubbed. Slipped them off surreptitiously under the desk for some relief and then forgot and wandered across the office. Not something I'd normally do.

    And Hazel (and David).... Baby Pink lacquered tootsie nails for me!

  6. Just had a donation that took me over the £1000 mark adding in off-line sponsor forms so am feeling pret-ty damn fine at the moment. Am just assembling a list of things I need to do before I get baldified. Having a picture taken to renew my driving licence is currently top of the list! :dance:  :banana:

  7. Out with the old and in with the new.

    'We are not now that strength which in old days

    Moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are;

    One equal temper of heroic hearts,

    Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will,

    To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.'

    Good luck, and see you on the flip side!

  8. Not all of us... ;)

    But even without 6 stone of extra whatever, I'm a grumpy, sweaty, melty mess. That said, I do feel that it's the turn of the sun-lovers to have it there way. We can be sure it won't last for ever.

    Sounds like it's been far hotter elsewhere. It's been hanging fount the 25°C mark here.
