  1. Trying to get through Friday afternoon. Looking forward to meeting writing group friends for a craft and natter session tomorrow. Tithebarn street Costa in Liverpool from 2pm in case anyone's in the area
  2. Hi Romanike As I understand it, it's teaching children to read by showing them how to recognise the sound a letter, or group of letters makes. And then putting them together to make/understand words. http://www.mumsnet.com/learning/phonics/what-is-phonics
  3. Another sporadic poster here. Someone from another site very kindly passed on the news and since then, like Cassie, I've found it hard to come on the site. In all the time I've been with BGO, David has been a constant. Witty, thoughtful and occasionally fixated on Keira Knightly, his posts always made me smile. He took the time to get in touch when we had to say goodbye to our lovely dog recently and, as usual, managed to say just the right thing. I wish I'd been paying more attention to the boards recently, but now all I can do is offer condolences and say what is turning into a very soggy goodbye. For some reason, I always imagined him typing in one of those cord jackets with the leather elbow patches and I'll keep that image in my head for when the new Doctor Who comes on. I'll be raising both a glass of wine and my sonic screwdriver to a perfectly splendid bloke.
  4. I think I was pre-Phonics as a method. I would probably also be on record as a 'late' reader because I didn't get picked to read at school. Once they noticed me, we whizzed through the list. Didn't bother me either way because I was being read to and reading at home. For those of you with experience of Phonics, what do you think of the article? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-25917646
  5. I'm catching up on my Marple today - with a little crocheting thrown in. Maybe a cuppa Raining and windy here too.
  6. Realised it's been ages since I've been on here so my one and only new year's resolution is to visit far more often! Happy New Year to you all!
  7. Final update. Just mopping up stragglers, but between hard copy sponsor forms and on line donations, we raised £1750 so thank you to anyone who contributed. This was done as part of the Pirates for Ellie Weekend in aid of Claire House Children's Hospice. Ellie's family are aiming to raise £6500 to pay for a day's care at Claire House in her memory. With donations from the rest of the pirate weekend, this year's total stands at £3000. Huge, huuuuuge thank yous - you are all good people!

    Rest in Peace

Never seen that before and it made me laugh. I'd much prefer to be remembered with a smile than a tear - I'd like to think Mel Smith was the same.
  9. People who start sentences with 'I'm not being mean/funny/racist/sexist but...' and then proceed to BE mean/funny/racist/sexist.
  10. I used to work away a lot which meant eating alone. As long as I chose a one-fork meal (scampi and chips was a favourite!) reading was not a problem Once I made the mistake of ordering prawns in garlic butter not realising I'd have to shell them. There were lovely but I really missed my book that night!
  11. There's always someone jumping on the bandwagon!
  12. Maybe not quite THAT crazy! I was thinking of starting with blue, though!
  13. Thank you! It's going to be interesting to see how much grey comes in!
  14. Will do once I get on the laptop to resize it!
  15. Hair has been removed! Picture is on https://www.justgiving.com/Baldie-Lynne/ Actually feels good! Huuuuuuge thank yous to everyone who's donated. Current donations/sponsorship standing just shy of £1500!
