This is a short story (57 pages my copy) about The Machine which runs the entire world.  As the title states it stops running but it does this gradually and the humans that live inside it do nothing to try to repair it.  In the end they all die.

Pretty standard stuff these days but I dare say that it would cause a stir when it was released circa 1909, before we got used to all of our modern conveniences.

I enjoyed it for what it was worth and it was well written but there were no surprises for me and I kept being reminded of China Miéville.
