I suspect Rolf's right.

Really, no one knows the origin of the Mercedes story so the choice is going to be made in the same misguided aspirational sense as calling your child Chardonnay, even though that was named after Henri de Chardon, an incredibly wealthy French nobleman in the twelfth century.

In fact, I think the only people who would know such a fact are those who worship Mercedes cars in such a hopelessly desperate fashion that they search out everything about them (other than the cash to acquire one). So those people - even knowing the origins - would still be bogan.

(Henri de Chardon may or may not have existed...)

Austin Healey?

His daughters have 'cute' names, but at least he's resisted calling any of them Sprite

Sprite Healey would be an odd name, I have to agree with you.

I work with an Austin Winkler which I always thought was amusing. A colleague has also called her recently born son Riley Ford which I believe is amusing to older colleagues...

I also used to work with a Mrs Gloss who called her son Matt...

Uma Thurman married Ed Balls, divorced him and married John Hurt. She's now Uma Balls-Hurt.

This poor woman was a noted philanthropist and sister of a governor of Texas: Ima Hogg. But if you're rich, you can better afford to have a daft name.

Contrary to popular belief, she did not have a sister named Eura.

As to the name Mercedes, it is a legal Spanish name as an abbreviation of Marķa de las Mercedes (Maria of Grace). Since there are a lot of Marias in Spanish countries, they usually have an explanation like that behind their first name which then often does become the name they are called by. I have known a couple of Consuelos whose real name was Marķa Consuelo (I think "who gives advice" but I'm not sure there).
