Nine weeks actually. Then another five when Freddie copped it.

(Perish the thought any more of 'em die...)

I was wondering how long it would take you to point that out. It was surely a race between you and MFJ.

So what is the best song ever written?

I'll plump for Paul Simon's Bridge Over Troubled Water.

As you know, I've been away for a few days - so MFJ has no excuse. (Unless he was away as well..?)

I never know with these things - opinion changes daily...

So many, but in my current mood I think I'll say 'Sweet Emotion' by Aerosmith or 'Shilo' by Neil Diamond.

No excuse, Deino, I just tend not to log on much at weekends!

Actually, it was a discussion on this topic back in 1974 that prompted me to start keeping lists of how many times I played all the records in my collection. I somehow thought that, after a few months, I would see that one particular track would be ahead of all the others, and that I could officially declare that as my favourite record of all time.

31 years later, I can merely state that, although my hobby has added much enjoyment to my music listening over the years, I am no closer to knowing what my all time favourite is. I am, however, able to state quite clearly that there is no such thing as the best record ever. Opinion is entirely subjective, as well as being changeable with mood swings. I can only wonder at what mood you have to be in to come up with Sweet Emotion or Shilo!

For what it's worth, Do You Believe In Magic by the Lovin' Spoonful is top of my list at the moment.

I will give you a million pounds if you can name 15 Queen songs without looking on the internet or on the back of the cd. Only in your memory.

Is that offer open to everyone? :p

(Well, if the website/'back of the CD' in question is saying that 'BR' was number one for only four weeks, then I think your money's pretty safe anyway...)

Hey, leave him alone, he's just turned 11. He's meant to know chart statistics from 29 years ago? Bloody bigger boys.

Besides...if Bohemian Rhapsody was No 1 over two Christmases, that would have been the week before and the week after Christmas; therefore you could say, as ajr indeed did, that it was "christmas no.1 for 4 weeks".

Christmas comes but once a year.

I think you may have missed the point there, unc!

(The next question is, however - what in the world is an eleven-year-old doing listening to Queen?? Just kidding, before I get an earful...)

Fair enough, now I read over it again. Just my natural avuncular protectiveness coming through there.

'Now I'm Here' and 'Seven Seas of Rhye' were their best singles. And do you ever hear those played anywhere? Do you buggery.

That's owing to the appalling state of UK radio, I'm afraid.

My favourite song varies according to my mood, but one that always gets me is George Michael's cover of Stevie Wonder's "They Won't Go When I Go"... powerful stuff.
