Within a book called Different Seasons the back cover says that the book contains four novellas, of which this is clearly one. It's only 132 pages long so I have no idea how to class it and feel guilty adding it to my reading list - it's not like I add every newspaper/magazine I read - none the less, I did read it and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I wont bother with a story synopsis since the film is so famous, however there are three differences that I can see. One : the prisoner who came into Shawshank and declared that Andy Dufresne was innocent was killed in the film but in the book he was simply moved, two : the old-timer who got out and died committed suicide in the film but this wasn't clear, although it could be inferred, in the book, three : Warden Norton committed suicide in the film after Dufresne's escape because he anticipated that Dufresne would ruin him but in the book he resigned, albeit a broken man.

I decide to read this because I wanted to know how they managed to get such a long film out of such a short story. Now I know.

Excellent story, highly recommended and a welcome return for me to Stephen King.
