Seduced by what I have read recently, and by this video

https://kdp.amazon.com/self-publishing/help?ie=UTF8&topicId=A2M7MM0UP7PHK0

I decided to publish my book on kindle. Uploading the MSWORD to their side was successful. It produced the draft which I was able to read on my Mac computer (equipped with the kindle reader). The problem is that the Table of Content (TOC), that was active on MSWORD is not active on Kindle. Please help me to solve this problem. Thank you in advance,

Ludwik Kowalski

P.S.

Here is how the TOC was created with my Word 2008 (Mac version of Word 2007):

1) First all chapter titles were made style H1 and all section titles were made style H2.

2) To create the TOC I went to the INSERT menu of MSWORD and selected the *"Index and Tables" option.

3) This brought the dialog in which I selected 2 for the number of levels (H1 and H2). Then I select the "Table of content" TAB and click the OK button.

5) To navigate my book in MSWORD I clicked on dotted line segments (on the left of page numbers in my TOC). It worked fine, but not on the kindle version of the book. The TOC was displayed but lines were not active.

What did I do wrong? What should I do. Navigating the book page-by-page is not acceptable.

Please help. Thank you in advance.

Publishing a Kindle Book

1) Inspired by The New York Times article about Kindle publishing (October 24, 2011), I prepared the third edition of my "Tyranny to Freedom ..." *book, submitted the manuscript and the book was on the market in less than 24 hours. It costs only $0.99, the lowest permissible price. By the way, there are no shipping charges for Kindle books, delivered via Wi-Fi.

2) Those who want to learn from my limited technical experience producing a Kindle book are invited to visit this website:

http://csam.montclair.edu/~kowalski/kindle/toc1.html
3) Will kindle devices replace traditional books? I do not think so. But many people say that I am wrong.

KINDLE FOR BEGINNERS

My mini-book about using Kindle is available at:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B006E4PBK0/ref=nosim?tag=bookgrouponli-21

It describes only those basic tasks which I actually performed. The title is KINDLE HOW-TO: NOTES TO SHARE; the price is less than one dollar. Each short note describes a different task, as shown below:

Table of Contents
Introduction
Note 1: Kindle's keys and buttons
Note 2: How durable are Kindle's batteries?
Note 3: Extracting text from a Kindle book
Note 4: Kindle's wireless channels
Note 5: Private documents on Kindle
Note 6: Archiving my Kindle books
Note 7: Finding a phrase in my Kindle book
Note 8: Grouping Kindle books into collections
Note 9: Reading Kindle books on my computer
Note 10: Writing Kindlle books

Being a beginner I would like to know what more knowledgeable people think about this mini-book. If you are one of such people then contact me by email at

kowalskiL@mail.montclair.edu

and I will send you the mini-book in Word format. Your comments will help me to improve the book. Yes, I am contemplating a second edition, after becoming more knowledgeable. Please share the link with those who might be interested.

I've moved this thread to Writers' Corner, as this is the place for budding writers to showcase and promote their work on BGO.

The book does not appear to be available through Amazon UK so for the moment I've left the link to the US site in place.

Found it and changed the link.

And I've merged it with one of kowalskil's numerous other self-publicising posts, with which I'm becoming a little tired, to be honest.

Updating my mini-tutorial for Kindle users

My free online mini-tutorial for Kindle users--“Kindle 3 How To: Notes to share”--has been updated. The added Note 11, for a potential writer of a Kindle book, describes how to create an active table of contents. Writing it was a real pedagogical challenge, especially displaying invisible components. The link is:

http://pages.csam.montclair.edu/~kowalski//kindle/kindle2.html

Feel free to share this link with others. Comments, as always, will be appreciated. Also share what you know about kindling. Thank you in advance.
