I have been following the Great British Bake-Off, and I treated myself the other day to a copy of Peyton & Byrne's British Baking.
If anyone knows this bakery, you will know how scrummy their cakes are. I only know the branch in St Pancras station, which I often visit when I'm getting a train from Kings' Cross.
Their book is lovely. I first saw it on display beside one of its cakes in a cafe, and I was won over as the cake was gorgeous. It has a lot of staples - things like caramel shortcake and lemon meringue pie. From that point of view, it's a great book to have on your shelf. And the recipes are pretty easy to follow - and delicious. I made the banana nut bread the day I got it, and it was yummy.
Oh, and it's a lovely looking book - a lilac hardback with nice matt paper. I got it half price on Amazon - via the BGO link, of course. (Given my Amazon spending lately, BGO should be in profit soon!)
