It's been a little while since I posted, but I just had to write about this awesome series I started a couple of months back.
Dashiell Bad Horse, a hot headed native american returns to the Prairie Rose reservation 15 years after his mother sent him away, intent on keeping him out of trouble and offering him a better life. With him comes a wave of violence that brings him to the attention of Red Crow - a mobster, high ranking chief in the tribe's police force, and owner of a soon to open casino. Red Crow hires Bad Horse into the force and soon has him wiping out any competition. However, as the story progresses we learn that Dashiell is involved with the FBI, who will stop at nothing to bring Red Crow to justice for a crime commited in the 70's.
Like a reverse western, Scalped presents a gritty way of life on an impoverished "rez", rife with crime and drug addiction. The artwork is suitable rough and ready, and some of the action scenes, whilst hard to make out, almost scream their way out of the page. The characters are also fantastic, each one with complex histories and troubles shaping the way they are currently. I thought this was an excellent crime story, and though it may be a little obvious, it's crying out for an HBO adaptation.
