By now, more people are aware of this series thanks to the excellent Darabont adaptation on FX. And, I think, for the first time, I am reviewing the latest instalment knowing that someone other than me and solace may care!
The 14th volume is a return to shocking events and devil-may-care attitudes to long term characters. The survivors are still living in the compound and trying to get by as best they can. They are struggling with new relationships, survivor guilt and paranoia. As they do this, the walking dead slowly become aware of their presence and begin to gather on the outside of the compound. It's not long before they will, again, become a problem.
As they gather in force, Rick decides it's best that they make a run for it while the rotting crowd is at its thinnest. This has devastating consequences for the group, highlighted in a 2 page plate of one horrific event.
As this volume closes, Rick and what's left come to the onclusion that they should stop trying to avoid the zombies and find a way to live among them, even if this means taking out a few every hour as a matter of routine.
This is still one of the best and most powerful comic book series around and possibly ever. It is a deserved classic and stands re-reading as when you get your sweaty little paws on the latest volume you read it so feverishly that you barely take it in other than the major plot incidents.
