I went shopping the other day and although I did not spend a huge amount it got me to thinking about the most anyone has spent on books in one go. Has anyone ever had an all out splurge or do you just buy one or two at a time? Just curious thats all!

I usually buy just one or two at a time....if I'm going on holiday then I'll buy something like 5 or 6, I fly through books on planes (no pun intended!) and if I'm going to a foreign country I get annoyed if I finish my books too quickly.

I agree, I hate that as well! There is nothing more frustrating then having nothing at all to read and knowing you probably won't be able to get any from anywhere. I always het laughed at for filling my bags and suitcases with books rather than shoes to wear or more clothes!

I never spend much at all on books...this is probably because I love classics and I never by them new. I love going to the used books sections of bookstores and buying a bunch of books for a couple bucks. Getting great books for nothing just makes my day. I also love used books because often they have the previous owner's name in them. Maybe it's weird to like this, but I find it facinating..."Chris Wilson" is the kid who owned my Lord of the Flies book (I don't think he liked it much)...I have "Rader's" phone number in the back of my My Life and Hard Times copy...whoever owned one of my Steinbeck books really liked Steinbeck b/c he crossed off all the ones he'd read on the "also by" list....
Anyway, that's a little off topic... I've probably never spent more than $30 on books in one time.

New books - £75.00
Second-hand - £225 (set of 12)
I agree with Tia, it's nice to feel your books have a history. I always feel a little sad when I see a first edition of a children's book in mint condition - it means the child for whom it was bought was not allowed to read it and grow to love it.

I went to Holland for 3 weeks a few years ago and I ran out of books in about a week. I re-read Harry Potter 4 soooooo many times before I found a newsagents at a station that sold a few English books, but I was about 10 and they only had adults books :( Luckily thay had a novelisation of Star Wars Episode 1 which wasn't too hard to read as I'd seen the film...

I usually buy a bunch of books all at once. Mostly I purchase from second hand stores and thrift shops. I think the most I have spent at a used store for $100.00 Cdn and at a thrift store would be $50.00 Cdn. As for new, it's usually MrJebbie74 who helps me spend tons and it's probably closer to $200.00 Cdn.

I've spent about £60 on Amazon in one go... I was completing a series of books where I already had a few and decided to go for the lot - get the pain of waiting around for deliveries all over in one go! :p
The most I spent in one go was in Blackwells - £80  stupid overpriced textbooks that I didn't use. I made that mistake once and haven't bought any I didn't absolutely desperately need since! :D

I've spent more than £100 on new books before, and er, rather more than that on antequarian ones. But that was only once.

Is this how much for one shot or cumulative within a short time span???
I don't have any bookstores where I am so I have become one of Amazon's best friends. :p They LOVE me! I order about 6 or 7 books at a time and sometimes I am ordering again within two weeks.
I agree about the need to have enough books when traveling - when I fly to the US, I always have at least three books with me for the flight. I am sure I probably piss off the other people on the overnight flight because I keep my light on and read the whole way. :o
I would say that I have, on occasion, spent over £100 at one time, especially when I am buying out of print books to fill in collections.

I was just being facetious, guys. I'd like to know myself what one book might cost that precise amount.
There you go - there's a new thread challenge...

Well, there's an 1892 edition of 'The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes' for sale on the 'Jonkers' website for £5,000, so Deinonychus spent chicken feed on his fantasy book!

Yes, fair point there. I was thinking more in terms of a new edition, as opposed to antiquarian - which as we know can fetch some extraordinary prices!

Actual cost not sure but I go away at least once a year to Hay-on-Wye and indulge in a book-buying frenzy with my husband. Record so far for one weekend was approximately 162 books. We need to buy more shelves.
