Hi all,
I am wondering if anyone can help me with writing a new book, a few of my friends at my high school are writing books, and i wanted to write one aswell, but their books are about drugs, gangs, assaults, bullying, racism etc, but i'm not sure if that's what boys aged 13 to 17 would really enjoy reading, yes i expect them to like the fact it's got guns and drugs and stuff like that but i think they might prefer a different genre, or slightly different storyline.
Any ideas??

Writing a book tends not to be about what people want to read, mostly because if you worry about that you are missing the point. There is hate literature out there that almost everyone on the planet hates but it still circulates and probably gets higher circulation rates than some published books. (This is only an example im do not condone hate literature)
every story has been told all you are doing is phrasing it in a way that people will be able to relate to this time; so if you want to write about bullying then that is fine most teenagers are bullied at one point of another so you are vocalising their pain.
what you need to remember is that it is about presentation, that doesnt meant crossing Ts and dotting Is, a book is a story so make it a good one. Make the characters envoke emotion, make the setting draw you in. It doesnt matter if the plot line is really boring if you can do that then you are already half way there. Look at documentaries done by Attenborough they do this all time but have no plot, if a person in their mind is there they keep reading (i know that was mixing my imagery but the point is what matters).
So what you need to remember is that it doesnt matter what you want to write about, although questionable how original you will be if you are writing what your friends are writing about, as long as you do it well.
And if that always fails ignore what everyone else says and do it your way, look at the Bronte sisters worked for them.
