Just wondering if people still want to keep this book group going (as well as the bookcrossing one!), and if so, what suggestions do people have for what they want to read next month? I see there are some suggestions in another thread there, but just wanted to check if people had specific suggestions.
Myself, I'd like to read the Count of Monte Cristo, by Dumas.

I'd be up for reading The Count of Monte Cristo. Have read and enjoyed The Man in the Iron Mask by Dumas

The Count of Monte Cristo does look good.. however, I am now thinking maybe I'd like to read something a bit "lighter" (ie. maybe a bit smaller!). I was watching Richard + Judy (well, someone's got to!) last night, and they were reviewing this book An American Boy (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0007109601/ref=ed_best_h_9/202-0702284-8688632) by Andrew Thomas. It's sort of a thriller/ murder mystery set in regency London. Looks good, and maybe a bit of a "lighter" read!

(being rather selfish as I have this as an on-loan library book that I haven't started yet . . . )
'The Left Hand of Darkness' by Ursula K. Le Guin
Jacket Blurb . . .
Winner of the HUGO and NEBULA awards
Praised as a groundbreaking work of science fiction, TLHoD tells the story of a lone human emissary's mission to Winter, an unknown alien world whose inhabitants can choose - and change - their gender.
His goal is to facilitate Winter's inclusion in a growing intergalactic civilisation. But to do so he must bridge the gulf between his own views and those of the completely dissimilar culture that he encounters.
Completely embracing the aspects of psychology, society, and human emotion on an alien world, TLHoD stands as a landmark achievement in the annals of intellectual science fiction.

I think I may have to "sit out" February's book reading, as the pregnancy thing is zapping my energy for even reading! :p

I think that one or two people need to be put in charge of deciding on books and then they should confer and tell people what it is. Then people can either take part or not. Otherwise, nothing is going to be decided.
Why doesn't Bill set up a voting system? Or, each month two different people can be 'in charge'.
Just an idea... :)

I'm quite happy to leave this sort of thing in the hands of enthusiastic and willing members. So Kate, since you thought of it...

The Count of Monte Cristo is a fabulous book! But if you decide to see a movie version - don't bother with the recent remake. The older version starring Richard Chamberlain was the definitive one and true to the book.
I am new here, so when would the next discussion be starting? And when will a decision be made about which book? I am willing to re-read Count of Monte Cristo or read anything else that is decided upon.
Have just finished Life of Pi if anyone is interested in using that (it's a small book so won't take long). But I'm open to other suggestions. Was thinking of reading Saturday by Ian McEwan next.
Waiting to hear with bated breath . . .

Hi
I'm another new member and I would love to get involved in your book group. From reading your posts so far it looks like you still haven't decided on a book. Is that right?
I think Kate's idea about a couple of people being in charge of deciding on the next book to read is a great idea. Otherwise no decisions will even get made. How about 2 people suggest 3 books between them and we then all have a week to vote on which one we want. If the final numbers are close, we can always read the runner up next month.
Since it takes everyone a while to get hold of the books, it might be an idea to know what next months book is going to be in advance. That way we won't be waiting around for people and can get stuck in.
What do you all think? I hope I've been helpful and not too bossy!
P.S. The Count of Monte Cristo sounds like a good idea and something that I've always thought I should read...

Hi,
Have just joined and am eager to know what the book for MArch is. Am looking forward to discussing new books or old classics. There seems to be a few options reading the various threads. Have to say that 'Saturday' By Ian McEwan looks like a good choice to start with.

Hi everyone. I'm new here too. I've spent months trying to find a local group and finally turned to the internet. This looks really interesting. I'm currently reading William Boyd's Any Human Heart but I'd be happy to try either of the suggestions so far. What happens now? Do we vote on a book or do we just get reading?
Lady Lazarus I have sympathy with the pregnancy turns your brains to soup problem! Don't worry - all will be well in the end! :)
Looking forward to reading - whatever the title might be!
