My middle son's headteacher recommended books by this author for my son as a next stage on from the books he has been reading. He is a voracious reader and finding titles which are suitable for his consumption (he is 8) but yet which are not too easy for him has been tricky. I bought a few titles on Amazon by this author and we have started reading Whale Adventure as our 'chapters book' at bedtime. It's certainly more complicated reading than we've been doing so far with Enid Blyton and Roald Dahl but it is really good. Has anyone else any experience of them? Which others would you recommend? My husband remembers loving them as a child too though I'd never heard of Willard Price before.

My experience is much the same as your husband's, Hilary. I thought these books were great when I was a child, and I started reading them when I was about the same age as your son, which is 30 years ago now.

I can't remember the contents now, which I suppose means they are pretty interchangeable and I couldn't single one out for you now. I definitely chose to read them on my own rather than having them as bedtime stories; I guess I must have found them in the library myself rather than them being my parents' choice of reading material for me.

My Dad put me onto his collection of Biggles stories about the same time, which still sat in his old bedroom at my grandparents' house. I suspect these must seem terribly old fashioned now, and possibly not very politically correct, but they might also be worth a try - I believe a few were re-issued a few years ago.

Aw, 8 year old Grammath! :p

My husband can pick out one or two which really stuck with him, an elephant one being the main one. But then he reads so slowly he never forgets any word he's ever read. I'm the opposite, I fly through books and love them but weeks later can hardly remember a jot! Middle son is really enjoying one with me at bedtime and one on his own at other times. We're reading Whale Adventure together and I'm not sure which he is reading alone. But yes, I guess with so many books all called *Something* Adventure, they're bound to get a bit interchangeable after a few.

We've now finished Whale Adventure and have gone on to African Adventure. I got some second hand ones on Amazon and they were in two volume books. :)
