View Full Version : What's the most famous film you've never seen?

Mad Dog and Glory
20th January 2005, 08:59 AM
Having discussed them in the Star Wars thread, for me it's probably a tie between The Empire Strikes Back and The Return Of The Jedi.

Claire
20th January 2005, 09:01 AM
Probably for me it's ET

Am I missing anything important? Is it worth seeing?

My Friend Jack

I have never seen two of the most famous and successful movies ever made...

Gone With The Wind

Titanic

Royal Rother
20th January 2005, 10:53 AM
Neither have I. (Not all the way through anyway).

I've not seen ET all the way, or Taxi Driver, or Schindler's List, or Saving Private Ryan.

I HAVE seen So I Married an Axe Murderer, The Man with 2 Brains, Home Alone, Carry on Regardless, Dennis.

I've really got to review my movie viewing haven't I?

Jassie
20th January 2005, 11:19 AM
I haven't seen 'Its a Wonderful Life'
Any of the Godfather trilogy
Exorcist
Carrie
- Can you tell I don't like horrors - I do class 'It's a Wonderful Life' as a horror..

How do you know if you've never seen it? Aha!

I have a real block about Westerns. I've never seen The Magnificent Seven or The Searchers or She Wore A Yellow Ribbon or True Grit or Stagecoach...

Probably better to mention the ones I have: a few of the Man With No Name films (aka the Man Who Never Speaks, which annoyed the hell out of me), High Noon, Shane and Unforgiven. The only one I liked was High Noon. I like my films to have dialogue. They are called talkies, after all. Strong silent types are anathema to me.

Odd because I used to love The Virginian, High Chapparal and Alias Smith and Jones as a kid.

PS. Just remembered that I've seen Once Upon A Time In The West - by some way, the best Western I've ever watched.

Harriet
20th January 2005, 01:54 PM
Exorcist
The Matrix (apparently it's a big deal)

I still haven't seen Casablanca, despite the fact that it's on every Christmas.

When you see a list by somebody-who-knows-about-films in the paper or wherever, they usually put Citizen Kane at or around the top. So I guess tha's the most famous film I've never seen.

The Matrix
Lord of the rings
ET
Gone with the wind
the sound of music

Darkstar

I haven't seen Bambi, or the Exorcist, or the Matrix 2 and 3, or The Godfather, or Gone with the Wind (although I have seen bits of it).

Scratch 'The Matrix' off my list, I saw it last night. I'm now confused about reality.............

Granny weatherwax
23rd January 2005, 06:22 PM
The matrix
Resevoir dogs
Pulp fiction
The battle of Britain

Claire
23rd January 2005, 07:35 PM
I haven't seen any of the Harry Potter ones.....I loved the books - but I can't really see the point of watching the films, because I already know what happens.....and there's so many other films out there.

I haven't watched any of those Bank Holiday classics either....

The Psoieden Adventure, (don't know how to spell it either  )
The Towering Inferno
Dambusters
The Great Escape

Haven't seen the Godfather, either, but I'm intending to rectify that at some point soonish.

Nick

I have a real block about Westerns.

If so, I'd suggest 'The Big Country'. My favourite western and, indeed, one of my favourite films - mainly because there is very little 'western' about it. Certainly has one of the best film scores ever.

As for films I haven't seen: The Sound of Music, My Fair Lady, anything like that I've never built the strength for.

Tess
27th January 2005, 08:11 AM
I have only just recently watched the first Godfather, yet to see parts 2 and 3.

I have neatly avoided all Star Trek and Bond films!

Claire
28th January 2005, 03:00 PM
That has to be the most astonishing so far....I seem to end up watching Bond films even when I don't intend to. How on earth have you managed to avoid them??

Silvergirl
28th January 2005, 03:17 PM
Easy - didn't go to the cinema when they were on and have never chosen them at Blockbusters.

I even bought my husband the complete set of Bond films last Christmas. He watches them when I go to my reading group!

Claire
28th January 2005, 03:22 PM

Me neither....but I've ended up seeing lots of them, anyway - or at least, bits and pieces of lots of them, even if not the whole way through.

But going to a book group does sound like a much better idea ;)

Clockwork Orange - but somebody told me there was a scene with a motorbike in it, so I shall watch it one day.

I finally saw both those last two 'classics' (Exorcist and Clockwork Orange) over the past decade. Neither particularly buttered my muffin, I don't mind telling you...

I've never seen Citizen Kane.

Citizen Kane

Our, more truthfully, I tried the first 15 minutes and I just found it unintelligable!

Grammath
9th February 2005, 05:39 PM
Never seen:

"The Sound of Music"
"Top Gun"
"Saving Private Ryan"
"Jaws"
"Gone with the Wind"

and thousands more. I wish I hadn't seen "Titanic", it was total y-fronts.

Films that have been banned are always a crushing disappointment, I'd add "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" to "Exorcist" and "Clockwork Orange".

purplebongowoman

How could you have not seen The Sound of Music? You must have actively avoided it. I've seen it about ten times, and never intentionally.

If I knew how I'd done it, I'd tell you, but I don't. I've seen bits on clips and list shows, but never sat through the whole thing. I'm not really a musicals person.

Even more bizarrely, this nice  Jewish boy hasn't seen the whole of "Fiddler on the Roof" either  . I could be thrown out of my synogogue if that was public knowledge (oops....).

To bring this thread back to life:

Clockwork Orange

Barblue
30th April 2007, 09:26 PM
Oh, Ian, I saw that when it first came out. Very scary.

My first choice for 'most famous' though would be Casablanca. Every time I watch it I see some other nuance I never saw before and the humour and timing of it is sublime.

Momo
30th April 2007, 09:54 PM
How comes I never saw this. There have been a lot of movies mentioned here that people have never watched but I have, like Casablanca, Gone with the Wind, It's a Wonderful Life, The Sound of Music, My Fair Lady (I love musicals), Fiddler on the Roof (Grammath, I hope you've seen it in the meantime, it's great!), War and Peace, and I agree, you should watch them all. But definitely start with CASABLANCA!!!

But I've never seen Lord of the Rings, The Matrix, only one of the Star Wars Movies (that was enough for the rest of my life), a couple of Bond movies, Godfather, The Exorcist, ET, Citizen Kane, only one Harry Potter (see Star Wars ;) )
And I haven't seen Titanic, either. Leo DiCaprio isn't exactly my cup of tea.

Movies I haven't seen that were brought out between now and 2005:
Oceans Eleven and Twelve
King Kong (haven't seen the old one either)
Underworld
Casino Royale
X-Men (any of them)

I'm sure I can think of more. Since I haven't seen these movies, I couldn't say they belong to the greatest movies, only the recent ones have been watched by a lot! of people.

Most famous movie I've never seen is probably Casablanca. Haven't seen Apocalypse Now either. Must watch it next time it's on so I can compare it to the book.

Recent movies I haven't seen include:

Casino Royale - hate James Bond with a passion
The second pirates of the Carribbean - avoiding films with Keira Knightley in them
King Kong - not interested
Superman - haven't got round to it yet
Walk the Line - ditto

I've had Children of Men sitting on my shelf for about three months. Must watch it this weekend...

I have seen Casablanca, many times. Great film :D

Ok! I will too! I have it on video or DVD or something but have never watched it.

But I've never seen Lord of the Rings, The Matrix, only one of the Star Wars Movies (that was enough for the rest of my life)

Me too, Momo. And I have no intention of ever seeing LOTR, no matter how many people rave about it.

Citizen Kane - watched about 20 minutes of it and that was enough.

I've since watched Casablanca and it was good but not THAT good. I found Humphrey Bogart a little annoying and I didn't like the way he spoke.

Ok, you can really shoot me this time!

I can't agree with the Kaning poor old Orson is getting. I think it's a magnificent film - it's sitting on my DVD shelves at this very moment. It has a wonderful, grand scope as well as being an intimate personal tragedy, whilst stylistically it's very impressive. All the more so when you set it in its contemporary context, where it was absolutely groundbreaking.

Still, I do know someone who agrees with you:

Family Guy Movie Rental (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzJpxJcmAuc)

(For those of you worried about copyright, Fox has become very savvy about net fanbases and has been happy to allow clips for promotional purposes - indeed they've put a lot on the net themselves)

EDIT: Oh the irony... :D

I haven't seen:

Gone with the Wind
Casablanca
One flew over the Cuckoos Next
A Clockwork Orange
Sound of Music

And I have tried many a time to watch Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon but I always fall asleep during it - so I still don't know what all the fuss was about at the time. Batman films have a similar affect on me, but I think that is just because they are black on black films so my brain thinks it must be night time.

I now have seen Citizen Kane, on DVD last night.

A French friend of mine has written a very good book on the use of flashback in film, with extensive references to Welles's masterpiece, which, while reading, I placed high on a list of movies to watch, and promptly picked up a copy of the DVD later that same day.

I'm not competent to write about the merits and demerits of any film, let alone one which is often reckoned to be the best film ever, so suffice it to say that I enjoyed it immensely, did not lose interest for one second, and ignored the phone when it rang about half-way through.

I'm now going to re-read what my friend says about it in his book.

The most famous films I've now never seen are The Sound of Music (still) and Casablanca.
