The penultimate book in this series is a little bit of an oddity. It's part filler, part history. Fragments of all the main characters still in play, filling us in on what happened before, during, and presently in the journey of this narrative.

Jesse and Tulip reunite and Jesse learns more than he wanted to know about his so-called friend, Cassidy. Tulip's story is filled in a little more with a strand about her growing up with a father who thought he wanted a boy then received a daughter. We then follow her to college where she meets Amy, a life-long friend who develops a life-long love for Jesse and envy of Tulip.

Then over to the Grail, where we spend time with Star and Featherstone as the struggle to remain in charge of the Grail. Especially as a new ruler, Eisenstein, visits to sort out Starr. He brings with him a rabid Rottweiler, and a Russian cannibal. Yes, I know, just try and go with it.

I was disappointed by this collection. It's a little too fragmented and I can't help feeling that by the penultimate book we should be cruising toward to the finale. Or at least still on the same narrative path. Yes, it was fun getting some more character backgrounds, especially Tulip's which really opens up her character. But, ugh...I just wanted to be headed towards the climax, and I felt that this edition pushed us off that path. Ah, well, it's still better than a lot of comic series...and I still have the final book to enjoy.
