My friend's five year old son wants for his dad to read him some bedtime stories. The problem is that my friend (Mr. Dad) doesn't know any good ones. Can you help? Which were your favorites?

I've moved this question to the CYA section, aquablue.

As I understand it, anything by Julia Donaldson (http://tinyurl.com/686j4f) goes down a treat with my small grandsons.
Her books are also easy to read as the text is nice and rhythmic.

The Gruffalo, and The Gruffalo's Child are particular favourites.

There is plenty of 'Read To' books in the relevant forum for you to browse. But I would second Julia Donaldson as a good starting point. At 5 years old, his dad should be able to quickly move on to books with a story, rather than picture books.

Yup, Julia Donaldson is a firm "read aloud" favourite. I'm afraid most of my favourites are definitely story time book which excite children rather than prepare them for bed!

However, if you check out Hampshire Libraries (http://www3.hants.gov.uk/library/childrens-books/school-books.htm#section242074-1) website you will find some suggestions in our Ready for School booklist - we will soon be adding a "Bedtime Reading list" too which will be perfect to answer this question! Other library services might also have suggestions, either in leaflet or website versions.

And, of course, I second Hazel's recommendation to look in our "Read To" forum.
