View Full Version : Book Swap

This is an idea I have been thinking about since the creation of Book Group Online, and the reponse it has had in the thread 'Do you prefer stand-alone stories, or are you in it for the long-haul?' in the General Fiction Discussion Point has encouraged me to launch it sooner rather than later.
This could work in more than one way, but the simplest as I see it is this: Member A posts a list of the books that he possesses that he would like to swap for other books. He then give an indication of what kind of books he might want in return.
If Member B wants one of those books, then she can make an offer of a book in return. More practically, it might be sensible for her to declare her interest in the first member's book and then list all the books she is prepared to swap. In which case, Member A might see something he wants, and the deal is struck.
The more members who list their swappable books the better.
Any giving out of addresses, email addresses etc MUST be done by Private Messaging, or by both parties going into the Chat Room when no one else is there. DO NOT give your home address or email address on the forum itself, for the sake of your own privacy.
Your reason for wanting to swap books is entirely up to you. It might be because you have read and liked them and are happy to pass them on, or perhaps you didn't like them or know you'll never read them and want to pass them on to someone who might.
Of course this doesn't need to be restricted to books, and could apply just as easily to CDs, videos and DVDs. Or that old teapot lying at the back of your cupboard.
The spirit of Noel Edmonds and Keith Chegwin lives!

Excellent idea - I'm off to rummage through some piles of books straight away.
Who else here is the right age to have grown up watching the original Multi-coloured Swap Shop? It's the earliest Saturday Morning TV I can remember.
A Few Moments of Nostalgia for anyone the same age as me!! (http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/ilove/tv/swapshop/intro.shtml)
(I didn't realise this site had a chat room - does it get used much?)

I've been in there a couple of time and it's been empty. So I guess not, but hopefully it will do when more members join.

I have 2 Cds, untouched, due to duplicates, that I'd be happy to put in the box for a swap.
Life For Rent - Dido
A Mark, A Mission, A Brand, A Scar - Dashboard Confessional
I also have all 7 series of Buffy on Video (Ermm, I'm 90% it's all 7 - I'll check if anyone is interested.) They have been played a few times as my wife is a fan, but I gave her DVDs for Xmas.
I might also have 1st series on DVD, now duplicated.... (Oh blimey, I'd better make sure of my facts in future! :o )
I guess I could ebay them, but this seems like it could be fun....

I will be putting a list together in the next few days.
RR - life's a bitch - fancy getting given 2 copies of a Dido CD! How come you're only offering to swap one of them? ;)
Claire - I seem to remember Noel Edmonds and his Multicoloured Swap Shop. Rarely watched it, though. I also recall the Mike Read show that followed it, in the early / mid 1980s (can't recall what it was called). Funniest moment I can remember was when the "band" Matt Bianco were on, doing a live phone-in. For some reason, there was no time delay, so the nation's youngsters got to see the look of horror on the singer's face and on Mike Read's when a caller came on the line, saying, "Hello, is that Matt Bianco? You bunch of w*****s!"
Just remembered - it was Saturday Superstore.

I have also just listed Ella Minnow Pea by Mark Dunn
Nevin Nollop left the islanders of Nollop with the treasured legacy of his
pangram "the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog". But as the letters
begin to crumble on the monumental inscription, the island's council forbids
the use of the lost letters and silence threatens Ella and her family.
Again will send to whoever PMs me, happy bookcrossing!

I've been culling out books I haven't read in a long time so I thought I'd just post what I'm looking at shifting:
Lord the Isles series by David Drake books 1 - 5
1. Lord of the isles
2. Queen of Demons
3. Servant of the Dragon
4. Mistress of the Catacombs
5. Goddess of the Ice Realm.
entire series by Jean M. Auel
1. Clan of the Cave Bear
2. Valley of the Horses
3. Mammoth Hunters
4. Plains of Passage
5. Shelters of Stone
I'm sure there's others but can't think them up off the top of my head from work.

The Line of Beauty - Alan Hollinghurst. I have an unwanted copy. Am happy to send it free of charge. It's not really my kind of book - have read about a quarter - so it doesn't come with any kind of recommendation - good or otherwise. Seems a pity to waste it though, if anyone is interested.

I will be putting a list together in the next few days.
Well.
When I said "a couple of days" I wasn't expecting it to be something in the order of 1,226 days. Where did the time go?
Anyway, I am willing to swap the following:
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell - Susanna Clarke
A Charmed Life - David Essex
The Shadow Of The Wind - Carlos Ruiz Zafon
Chronicles Volume 1 - Bob Dylan
Boy Soldier - Andy McNab & Robert Rigby
The Sound Of Laughter - Peter Kay
Journeys In The Dead Season - Spencer Jordan
I have probably made comments on each of these somewhere on BGO, but I've read and enjoyed all of them. All are paperbacks.
As per Bill's suggestion, post a list of what you have to offer and let me know if you're interested in acquiring any of these.
EDIT... sorry, these all ended up in the Oxfam shop!

The Multi-Coloured Book Swap has been little used and as has been observed there are many specialist sites that deal efficiently with book exchanges. Nevertheless, as meg suggested it's fair enough to leave a thread in Central Library for anyone who would like to swap here, so I've moved this thread over.

Now that you've clarified ( ;) ) this has long been pretty dormant, but we kept the area in case anyone wanted to flag up new offers, so give it a go, Twinkle!

I must say I like the idea of reviving this thread. However, if we do ought we to clarify or perhaps I should say, update the rules since Bill wrote them in 2005?
I am thinking primarily of postage and packing - does the person who has the item to swap (Member A) pay the p&p if the person wanting the swap (Member B) cannot find an item on Member A's list? In which case I suppose it's not a swap as such! ;)
I know Read It Swap It website works as direct swaps, but Bookmooch works on a points system. Personally I think the points system could become a little unweildy, but other might not.
On the other hand if our system only works on a minor, occasional book 'swap' that is not reciprocated are any of us bothered about p&p to another member of our community. I for one would not be but I just wondered whether we ought to clarify the situation.
Do we take it that the lists already on the thread are no longer current?
Anyone else got any thoughts on this or am I making a mountain out of a mole hill here?

With regards to P & P any books/cds/dvds swapped would be sent 2nd class I assume so postage will be minimal if its only one item.
If its a number of items then the sender to negotiate with the receiver??

Well, if we assume the general principle of a one-for-one swap it should work out much the same in terms of postage. I think it's something that can be worked out amicably between the parties involved, but if someone offers a book to swap then there needs to be a swap in return.
I don't think this will ever take off to the degree that we can have a points system - just flag up what you want to swap and people can make their offers.
