View Full Version : What newspapers or magazines do you read?
My Friend Jack

A conversation I had recently with a colleague prompted me to start thinking about this. As I have got older, I seem to buy fewer periodicals. I'm not sure whether this is because I can get more information from the internet, TV or radio - I don't think so. I suspect it's that, as I have got older, there have been fewer publications aimed at me. Anyway, a very brief list of some that I have read regularly over the years...
As a boy: TV21, Rover and Wizard, Valiant
As a youth: Spiderman, Avengers, Fantastic 4 (early 1970s UK reprints); NME, Record Mirror, Story of Pop (part-work), Record Collector, The Beatles Book, The Sun :o
In my 20s: Record Collector, The Beatles Book, Record Mirror, Q, NME, History of Rock (part-work), The Movie (part-work)
In my 30s: Record Collector, Q
In my 40s: Record Collector, Daily Mail ( :o the wife buys it, I just read it)
I'm afraid I stopped buying Record Collector about a year ago, so the Daily Mail is all I read on a regular basis. I do occasionally by a magazine called "Royals" which some others on here will be familiar with.
So, what do the rest of you buy on a regular basis? Do you find there's less of interest as (and because) you're getting older?

Boy: Scorcher, Score, Shoot, Dandy, Beano
Older boy: Scorcher and Score, Tiger and Scorcher, Jackie (sister's!)
Youth: Record Mirror, Record Mirror and Disc
20s: Private Eye
30s: Empire, Q, Taking The Biscuit, Which?, Sunday Times, The Sun, News Of The World
40s: What Hi-Fi Sound & Vision, Home Cinema Choice, Which?, Observer, News Of The World
From boyhood to manhood and probably always: The Guardian

I don't read any newspaper or magazine on a regular basis. Newspaper is Telegraph of choice, but we have no deliveries in our village so I'm a bit buggered there really.
I subscribe to AdvantEdge magazine, but that is only a quarterly publication so hardly qualifies.
Last magazine I bought was "Word", a newish music mag which seemed quite good. Didn't even read that cover to cover.
Internet tends to be my source of news, but even then I don't often deliberately catch up on news, just tend to drift into it whilst surfing.

Since I'm so much younger than the others who've replied to this, my answers would be a bit different. ;)
As a girl: Twinkle, Bunty, Mizz
As a teenager: J17, Bliss, More, Cosmopolitan
Since coming to uni (I don't quite think I can justify putting "20's" - not quite old enough to do that yet! :p): Cosmopolitan, Metro (technically I don't buy it - its a freebie, but I make the effort to pick it up most mornings), New Scientist.
Hmmm. Not quite as many as I thought there would be. I would probably buy a local newspaper, but tend to use the BBC website most days for keeping up to date with local/national stuff. I'm also subscribed to numerous e-newsletters, but I guess they don't count! ;)

Suppose I only really read newspapers online now - the Guardian / Observer, Times, or Independent. Still dip into the NME website now and again. I find that I don't have time to sit and read a newspaper like I used to.

Well my parents get The Times, I read parts of it sometimes, the front page etc. I don't read magazines on a regular basis, but when I do it's normally ones like Vogue and Elle.

Still enjoying reading newspapers, but like some of the others I do not buy so many magazines these days.
Daily Papers - Daily Mail and local evening newspaper
Weekends - Sunday Times
Comics and Magazines:
Childhood - Bunty, School Friend
Teens and Twenties - She, Marie Claire
Thirties onwards - magazines connected to hobbies ranging from Horse and Hound, Prima and to my current interest in Craft Projects.

These days I really only read newspapers online - mainly The Guardian and the Sunday Herald, plus of course BBC News online.
As for mags
As a child I used to get Jackie and read my brother's sci fi mag Countdown.
Never really read magazines much in my later teens or twenties. I think I occasionally got Cosmo, and I was a sporadic New Statesman reader.
In my thirties I read New Internationalist, New Statesman, History Today and sometimes the BBC Good Food mag.
Now it's Scottish History, Writers' News, Solander (Historical Novel Society Mag) and Mslexia

Cor!, Knockout and Whizzer and Chips were the publications of choice as a youngster.
As a teen, NME, Shoot and Record Mirror (although I dumped RM after a short while, because it seemed just "too main stream". (I can't be the only one who thinks that Music Journos are just about the most pretentious gits on the planet, with the writing talent of a 5 year old - or have they changed in the last quarter century?).
As for Newspapers in my early 20's probably NOTW, Sunday Mirror or Sunday People - well if I am honest which ever had the largest paragraph (and that was normally it) of Reading FC's latest triumph (or not).
These days, I don't get any newspaper or magazine, and hardly ever watch TV news. The recent Tsunami was the only time I watched the news in the last couple of years. If I want news, I usually go to the BBC's website, or may be catch it on the radio when I am in the car. I don't miss "The News" (or should I say "evening ratings war" or "let's see who can make the biggest mountain out of a mole hill competition") in the slightest.

Very wee laddie (c 5-6): Pippin, Treasure
Wee laddie (c 7-8): World of Wonder, Look & Learn
Boy (c 9-12): Scorcher, Striker, my sister's comics (well, a boy needs an education)
Older boy/yout' (c 13-17): Record Mirror, Shoot, probably other people's porn
(I say!) Young man (c 18-30): NME, Melody Maker (almost never Sounds)
Since: various music monthlies/lots of occasionals
Newspaper of choice: Grauniad/Obverser

I read the BBC history and BB wildlife magazines reguarly and usually get a tv magazine so I know what's on :)

My tastes haven't really changed that much! I have always had 'older' tastes. I'm 42 now, but in my teens/early 20s I bought National Geographic, New Scientist, HiFi mags, Q , Gramophone/BBC Music.
Twenty years later, I still buy them!
I've also stuck with the same newspaper since its launch in 1986 - The Independent . Before 1986, I tended not to read newspapers at all. It is still the only paper I buy and read.

As a girl: nothing really
As a student: New Statesman, Guardian, Cosmopolitan
As a young adult: Guardian, Observer, Cosmopolitan, She, nursing journals
Now: I only have subscriptions to genealogy publications: society journals and Family Tree magazine. Buy newspapers ad hoc if I think I'll have time to read them, usually a Sunday broadsheet. Still value their more in depth analysis.

I'm a magazines junkie. I stopped reading newspapers a while ago, acres of print telling me nothing:
Kid: Dandy, Beano (bought for me by my Dad, who wanted to read it at least as much as I did), Nutty (for the mighty "Bananaman"), Buster, Whizzer & Chips
Teen: Record Mirror, NME, Melody Maker, Q, Viz, indie music fanzines like Lime Lizard and Siren
20s: NME, Melody Maker, Q, Private Eye, Time Out, Wisden Cricket Monthly, the late lamented Ink, Select and Vox. I read the Saturday Grauniad for a while, but I've better things to do with my weekends.
Now: Q, NME, Time Out, Private Eye, Wisden Cricketer, All Out Cricket, Yes...No...Sorry (excellent cricket fanzine - can you detect a theme??). Online mags like The Onion and SchNEWS.

when i was wee i read bunty - i had a huge pile of them that i collected and refused to chuck out, much to my mum's disgust! it was in date order (sad child) and i got really annoyed if anyone messed it up! it got to about waist high before i agreed to pack some away.
i then went on to sugar, bliss and j17 to teach me all about boys and clothes ;)
now i read heat because it helps me win pub quizzes!

I was a subscriber to Medieval History Magazine - which has now stopped publication *sniffle*.
Family get Sunday Times, but that's all really. I just read loads of books. :)

What I read depends a lot of the country I am in. Usually I can grab an Economist almost anywhere.
Now in Cairo I can find She and Glamour and French Marie Claire and Marie France, but all the pages with some nudity have been ripped off by the censors so sometimes the articles will be truncated.
I try to get the weekend Sunday Times, for the culture magazine, it usually arrives two days later...
My father sends me snippets from the New York Rewiew of Books or from italian newspapers when he thinks they might be interesting.
The local magazines of some interest is Egypt Today, with good writers on anything from politics, culture, art, environment and a good list of restaurants.

As a kid: The Beano, The Dandy (and loads of books)
As a teenager: Golf World, Golf Weekly, The NME (and no books whatsoever)
As an early twentysomething: The Guardian, The Sunday Times, Mojo
Now: The New Yorker (the only absolutely essential mag in my life), The Times/Sunday Times, Word, American Esquire.
Sadly, I threw my Beanos - about 1000 - out a few years ago after some mice in my shed half-destroyed them.
I'll always put books before papers and mags, though.

Not only that I don't have to pay for it, woooot!. My kids bought me a subscription for Christmas.
I think they have an ulterior motive as two of them play as well.

As a child : The Beano, The Sun
Teenager : Computer and Video games (when it still had program listings), various magazines dedicated to the ZX81 / ZX Spectrum, Acorn User, The Sun. New Scientist, Sounds or NME depending on which one the 6th form Library was buying that term.
At Uni and my Year off and into my 20s: The Sun, The Times, Q, Venue (Bristol listings mag, equivalent of Time out), Car and Car Conversions, Interzone (wonder if that still exists).
Now: gave up buying newspapers about 5 years ago due to being fed up with the hysteria and cult of celebrity they peddle. Only magazine I buy regularly is the Radio Times, plus I get the missives from Bristol MC, The Imp Club, Porsche Club GB and Liberty in the post.
I've found a few more, m:

And in later years The Sun and the Times! What with that and a passion for both Jane Austen and pedal-to-the-metal car races you're a man of extremes, Mark, I'll give you that!

As a child, Beano, Dandy, The Eagle (had three brothers) and always The Daily Mirror, which was my parents choice of daily rag. Cassandra used to fasinate me, as did the cartoons.
Never was much of a magazine reader in my youth but used to read People's Friend as a young mum because my mother-in-law took it and passed it on to me. Always read The Daily Telegraph as an adult, plus The Sunday Times.
Currently take NewBooks magazine. Have had it on subscription for a few years now, although it's possible to buy it in the shops now. Great on information on new publications and has a lot of free books available with every copy. I've discovered quite a few modern writers this way and some very good reads too. Also get Writer's News and Writing Magazine on subscription.

We've never had a daily paper. Used to take The Sunday Times, until Julie Burchill started writing for them. That was the last straw. We were already thinking it was a waste of time and money, as we couldn't finish it within the week.
Our only regular buys are Radio Times, and The Herts & Essex Observer (the local weekly paper).
I buy Gardeners' World Magazine intermittantly.
My parents read The Daily Herald, until its demise, and the swapped to either The Mirror or The Sun. I'm afraid I can't tell the difference, neither of them seem to have much 'news', and I can feel my blood pressure rising on the odd occasion I try reading one...but then that's why they exist isn't it? - to whip their readers into an apoplectic fury over their current campaign.
Our Sunday papers back then were The News Of The World, and The People, and magazines I remember were John Bull (again, until its demise) and sometimes Titbits.

I find it strangely unnerving to look at myself through the magazines I read.
NewspapersThe Guardian and The Independent, but our local shop doesn’t stock many so I often end up with The Times. Most of my news is from Radio 4.

Never mind the Mirror- she was all over the Guardian Weekend magazine this Saturday.
(She's the girlfriend of a footballer. Wayne Rooney, I think he's called, not that I pay attention to what he does for a living.)
The Grauniad seems to be forgetting its roots and getting increasingly sycophantic over meaningless celebs.

Currently take NewBooks magazine. Have had it on subscription for a few years now, although it's possible to buy it in the shops now. Great on information on new publications and has a lot of free books available with every copy.
Every time the magazine is published - bimonthly - it reviews four new books. They have several hundered of each of these books available FREE to the readership and you can request one of them but have to pay postage of £2.95. In addition, there is always a list of books they have in stock that are available at a very low cost, usually a less than three pounds.
I have been taking the magazine for a few years now. Each of the new books has been read and is reviewed by one of the subscribers and the first chapter is always included in the magazine so you can get a flavour of how the book reads. In addition, the magazine includes interview articles on writers and lots of other items connected with books, libraries and writing, as well as all the other magazine type stuff like letters, etc. It is now a very glossy substantial magazine, but it wasn't always like that, though the content has always been good. The group also publish magazines for children, teenagers and young adults, though I have never acquired any of those.
If you try it I hope you like it - I do.

*WARNING NAMEDROP ALERT* Can I pass your feedback to Guy (editor and owner of NewBooksMag)? I'm sure he'd love to see it. He is a member of my RL book club, and his knowledge is always incredible! Always feel a bit: :notworthy
There have been some problems with the magazine for younger Children - it was running at a huge loss, and has since been disbanded.
The older children's magazine - TBK mag (sounds like it should be for Teens, but is actually aimed at 8-12) - is distributed mainly via Peters the library supplier, and I understand the bulk of it's readership comes from Public Library Services and Schools. If you ask, you might find that your local library has a copy.
