I recently bought the first in this series for one of my boys who had seen it advertised.
I was pleasantly surprised. Three of them have now read it and are begging for the rest of the series.
Without giving too much away The Lightning Thief was a really clever mix of modern day and greek myth. The mythological characters and situations were all pretty much as they should be not too distorted. Its a good fun read ideal for my 11 year old who devoured it but much enjoyed by my 14 year olds aswell. It is probably a bit young for the older ones but as they only knew bits of mythology it has sparked their interest. I intend to take them to Knossos in the summer and one is asking for books on Norse mythology.
All in all recommended and when we get the others I'll let you all know what they think!!

Hi Elfstar - I've merged your thread with Huntress' one about the series.
I've still not got around to reading any of them and I really must. The Lightening Thief won our Book Award last year and I can't escape from young teenagers telling me how fantastic the whole series is.

My son is 12 years old and his school assigned the first book in the series for summer reading last year. What a success! He loved it and read the entire series over the summer. I usually like to read the books he enjoys and so I read them, too. I enjoyed them myself. I particularly liked the situations where it turned out some harmless-seeming human was actually a dreadful, scary creature. I strongly recommend this series for that age group. The other series he found and enjoyed this year was the Alex Rider series, but I will post about that separately.
I told my son that I was writing this review and he said to tell everyone that it is important to read these stories in order. I agree.

I will see it on Saturday--my son's birthday party is to go to the movie with a few of his friends. The reviews have been mixed, so I'm pretty curious. I will let you know what I think after I've seen it. Has anyone else seen it yet?
