This book was published in 1972, but it was a landmark publication for me. Half of the book was a series of essays and articles on various aspects of music, compiled and edited by Charlie Gillett. The second half, however, was the first ever attempt to present a "UK Chart Log." Compiled by Pete and Annie Fowler, it simply listed every record to have made the UK Top 20 between 1955 and 1969. I found this an absolutely fascinating volume, and it really kick-started my interest in the statistics behind the music.
I still have my rather worn copy of Rock File - obviously long ago superseded as a useful work of reference, but still much treasured.
