This is the story of the author's unsupported crossing of Antarctica with Dr Mike Stroud. Fiennes is a fine (sorry!) writer, but I found the book quite irritating, mainly due to their incompetence: Stroud's watch battery dies because he didn't get it checked before leaving; a sledge wasn't set up correctly when it was built and they didn't check it before setting off. It's almost as if they had a subconscious desire to make it harder.
But if you can forgive them this, it's a well-written account of their adventure.
