I got this book in a lucky dip a few years ago, and I've read it about 3 times. It's so good, and sad. I think it gives a good insight of China at the time of communism, from a civilian's point of view. It's also good because it shows how even people who have a rubbish, unhappy childhood can have a good life in the end.

It's SUCH a good book, it's so sad it always upsets mewhen I read it. WHat was the one after it, that followed the rest of her life... Falling Leaves or something, also a very good book. Not particularly cheerful for the most part, but still a good read :D
