I am looking for books that will be suitable for a six year old who is capable of reading Narnia on her own (even if she doesn't quite understand a lot of what's going on in it). I'm looking for things at a similar reading age, but which won't go over her head intellectually.
Anyone any recommendations?

I have a lot of books to recommended!
-Lucy and the big bad wolf by Ann Jungman
-Holes by Louis Sacher
-Anything Roald Dahl!!
Maybe these would be rather easy if the kid can read Narnia at six! These are just books I enjoyed (and still do!)

Here are some suggestions for confident readers:
Street Child by Bertie Docherty (orphan boy survives on the streets in Victorian times)
Tracy Beaker by Jacqueline Wilson (girl in the children's home comes up trumps)
Books by Anne Fine eg Bill's New Frock (boy wakes up one morning to find he is a girl), The Angel of Nitshill Road
Books by Michael Lawrence: The Killer Underpants, Toilet of Doom and Maggot Pie (these are VERY funny, they hooked my son into reading)

Thanks for your suggestions. :D I thought I'd better not go for Dahl because i'm not sure what she's already got - I know she's got at least one. I've heard of Holes so I'll maybe try and get that, or perhaps Street Child. I'll certainly add everything to the list for birthdays and other times.
thanks again.

Without wanting to be sexist - are there any recommendations for good contemporary books for boys 8-10 - with particular interests in sports, history, animals - but not fantasy or science fiction?
