Piece Of Cake

A year or two back I was introduced to a short series on tv (probably BBC) called Piece of Cake. I thoroughly enjoyed the show, and have watched it many times. I was happy to have stumbled across the book it was based on by Derek Robinson. I usually don't read too many stories based on the World Wars, but once I picked this one up I could not put it down. The writing was so vivid and was touched with so much humour that I most happy curled up on my couch, giggling away to myself. I would seriously recommend this to anyone who appreciates a Brit sense of humour (but would also suggest having a bit of background knowledge about the wars as Robinson uses quite a bit of war slang.)

The TV series was excellent, not too long ago I rented the DVDs. Piece of cake is an excellent peiece of writing, and of the five or so Robinson books I have read, it is probably the best, or at worst second best.

Another good long read, that spends a lot of time introducing the characters to the reader, and is so much more than "Good-oh-let's-kill-the-bally-hun-bandits-at-eleven-o'clock", if you know what I mean.

In another thread, I mention his WW1 Royal Flying corps trilogy. Books along similar lines, and if you enjoyed Piece of cake, I would certainly recommend that you add that series to your wish list.
