I do like my Private Eyes amateur and seedy. Sam Acquillo certainly fits the bill here, as he sits around a dilapidated cabin on the coast in The Hamptons. After dumping a successful career as an automotive engineer and leaving his wife and daughter, his only companions are his dog and vodka.
When he finds his crotchety neighbour drowned in the bath he isn't happy with the official verdict of accidental death (why would an arthritic pensioner get in the bath when she always used a walk-in shower?) and takes it upon himself to poke around.
Knopf's first novel is well written and well plotted, and he's written at least one more Acquillo book that I'm sure I'll read. He's an interesting character with enough history to make him interesting.
