I received this book as a gift, probably something I'd not have thought to buy for myself, but I was pleasantly surprised. I read the book before seeing the film, and (as is usually the way) the film didn't do the book justice. What you miss from the film most is the fantastic use of Cockney dialect in the book. While I felt that there were too many 'incidental' characters, the plot was good and fairly believable. Unfortunately, the film didn't quite seem to capture the feel of the book for me.
