This is an exciting development for lovers of the historical novel - the first in a new series by Bernard Cornwell, writer of all the Sharpe books. This is set in the reign of King Alfred.

I don't usually read historical novels. MOH has never read a Cornwell before but enjoyed this and thought I might too. At the moment I'm a bit iffy about it but am giving it more time thinking it might engage me more when Uhtred gets to be with King Alfred etc..

I suppose I'm not used to such a straightforward prose style.

Even better is the trilogie about Arthur.

I very much enjoyed The Last Kingdom. Then again I enjoy Bernard Cornwell and history as a whole.

The Arthur trilogy is absolutely superb- some of my favourite ever books.

I am a massive fan of Bernard Cornwells books in general, and would rate the his arthur books up there with anything I have read.

I actually feel the last kingdom stuiff his worst series to date, but would advise everyone who enjoys historical fiction to read the winter king and his sharpe series of books.
